When former guard turned farmer Giles moved in to the area, Ripper and his gang began terrorising him and his family. The situation eventually escalated when one of Ripper's men, Ethan, murdered Giles' wife, Jennifer.
Upon hearing of Giles' situation, the Hero of Bowerstone has two options in order to solve Giles' problem.
Firstly, the Hero can choose to help him, thus starting the Cold Comfort Farmer quest. After talking to Giles, the Hero heads to Ripper's camp and wipes out his entire gang. Once all of his men are dead, Ripper chooses to confront the Hero, but is bested and surrenders. The Hero can then choose to kill him outright, or take him to Giles. Once he is Giles' prisoner, Giles binds him and escorts him to Bowerstone where he will be hanged for his crimes.
Alternatively, the Hero can choose to help Ripper, thus starting the Red Harvest quest. The Hero assaults Giles' home, killing many guards that have been stationed there, and eventually Giles himself. Once Giles is dead, the Hero receives a key to his basement, where they find Giles' Manuscript - a journal detailing Giles' pursuit of the Ripper gang back when he was a guard. The journal details a raid in which Giles and numerous other guards rushed into a cave in which the Ripper gang was hiding. They were unable to make an arrest, as all the guards fell into fits of hysterics upon see Ripper and many of his cohorts dressed up in frilly womens' clothing, dancing and singing. Once the manuscript has been read, Ripper, Ethan, and another crony confront the Hero and attack, only to be killed.
- Ripper has been known to use Time Control during combat, which gives some indication that Hammer, Garth, Reaver and the Hero of Bowerstone are not the only Heroes left. No other bandit uses Will aside from the bandit leader that assaults Castle Fairfax after it has been purchased by the player.
- Ripper is a clear reference to the character of Rupert Giles, played by Anthony Stewart Head, from the American television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Firstly, Giles and his son's name combined make the character's name. Secondly, as a youth, Rupert Giles operated under the moniker of "Ripper", the name given to the bandit that terrorises Giles and his family. One of the members of Ripper's gang is also called Ethan, and in Buffy the character Ethan Rayne was once one of Ripper's gang. The name of Giles's deceased wife is Jennifer, referring to Rupert Giles' love interest Jenny Calendar, played by Robia LaMorte, who also meets a premature end.
- When he surrenders, he drops his sword, a steel cutlass, allowing the Hero to pick it up (if the Hero defeats him while he is using his rifle, he will drop a Iron Flintlock Rifle instead).
