It's a good day when you've been strung on by two little kids, I'll tell ya.
— Derek

Derek is a character featured in Fable II. He is a guard operating within Bowerstone Old Town. During the Childhood quest, he has lost the arrest warrants for five of the most wanted outlaws in Bowerstone; namely the notorious Nicky "the Nickname" Chalmers and members of his gang. He recruits two local youths, Rose and Sparrow, to search for them and retrieve them in return for a single gold coin.

Three warrants may be found outside the warehouse owned by Balthazar, while a fourth is found stuffed into a bottle of wine stolen by the tramp Magpie. Once these four have been retrieved, the stray dog encountered earlier brings the fifth and final warrant to the children.

Once the five warrants are in the possession of Rose and Sparrow, they set off to return them but are intercepted by the gangster Arfur, who offers a gold coin for the children to give him the warrants instead of the guard. The young Sparrow is presented with the choice, unaware of the far-reaching consequences it will have.

Should the Hero bypass Arfur and return the warrants to Derek, the outlaws will all be apprehended or killed and the neighbourhood flourishes into one of Bowerstone's most desirable boroughs. Derek is promoted to Sheriff, and the Hero is provided with a discount at local shops.

If the young Hero hands the warrants over to Arfur, the neighbourhood becomes an impoverished, crime-ridden slum. Derek is fired and the other guards are ousted from the neighbourhood, now controlled by the local crime lords. Arfur offers the Hero a similar discount at shops for his earlier assistance.

Notes[]

  • After encountering him in adulthood, he is never seen again following his conversation with the Hero. As such, this is the only opportunity to kill him if desired.
