The Abbot was Hammer's father, and was the leader of the Temple of Light until he was killed by one of Lucien's men. In your first meeting with him, you have to talk to him in the quest The Journey Begins. After you return from Wellspring Cave with Hammer, due to an alarmed monk asking for them to return, the Abbot is killed. His death resulted in Hammer breaking her oath of pacifism, and ultimately, killing Lucien's lackey, Hans. He was buried up a hill in Oakfield, away from the actual graveyard, and the Golden Oak acorn is planted in his grave. Later, upon returning from the Spire, the grave site will appear different. If you defended the Light, the tree will flourish, while if you massacred Oakfield, the tree will be destroyed.
A new Abbot, later in the game, takes over from Hammer's father, after his murder. He is met during the quest known as Defender of the Light. His associate, Timothy Lightjoy, can be found inside the temple.
There is a bug in the game where if you go to the Abbot, but then walk away, you will not be able to carry on with the game. This bug, however, was fixed in the January 2009 patch.
